"Wake up! The holidays are over!" Sounds familiar? This is probably one of the popular taglines parents use to spring their children back to life just before the end of the lengthy holidays. It serves as a wake-up call to their children to get ready for school life and at the same time implying that they should give up on their pastimes and concentrate fully on studying.
However, what kind of pressure are they exerting on us students actually? Undue pressure or pressure to send out a statement to us, students? "It is a way to stimulate the students into action," quoted one parent who swears by this tagline before the end of every holiday. One student, who begs to differ, joked " It gives us unnecessary stress, we might commit suicide. "
The student's point of view is not exactly senseless, stress given by parents could only have two effects, firstly a postive effect and the student reacts to the wake-up call , secondly the adverse effect when the student treats the extra pressure as a burden and breaks down under the pressure.
Conversely, some parents prefer to prepare their child by letting them enjoy while they still can. One parent said nonchalantly " Its the holidays! What's the hurry? " Another student agreed totally, stating " Holidays are there for you to rest, why waste it by worrying about school? "
Certainly, holidays are there for us to rest and relax our over-exerted body, yet, will too much relaxation cause us to be lax in our studies and therefore result in poor results? That is a question yet to be answered.
" Wake up! The holidays are over! " My mum yelled for the second time. Am I suppose to simply brush off the pressure or use the pressure to spur me on? I am not sure, what will you do?
