Yes, I agree that parents still overcontrol their child nowadays, even in this modern generation of ours.
Due to the open mindset of the modern society, parents nowadays may not have controlled their child as much as the older generations had done but there are still traditional beliefs which are rooted into the minds of these adults. In a bid to carry such beliefs on to the next generation, parents controls, or in some cases over-control, their child in 3 aspects: physically, mentally, socially.
Firstly, parents tries to control their child's behaiviour and actions, especially in public. Children are normally considered a disgrace to the parents when they behave immaturely or insensitively in public. Therefore, parents might decide to control the child's action by imposing threats or even punishments in case they do not act 'the way they want it' in public. However, by imposing such threats and punishments, it prevents the child from being what he really is. This might in turn backfire and destroy the child's confidence in building their own personality and character.
Secondly, the children's mindset is usually controlled by the parents. In the process of trying to bring in traditional beliefs into the minds of the children, parents resort to inserting their own steroetypes into the minds of the child since young. Thus, the children are in a sense brain-washed by their parents and thus restricting their thinkings to the stereotypes and beliefs put into their minds by the parents themselves.
Thirdly, parents tries to restrict their children' freedom, by not allowing them to mix with their friends or some even to the extent of grounding them. This is done in a bid to prevent their child from mixing with the wrong comapany, and ruin their future. The good intentions are there for all to see, but it is not without bad points too. By restricting their child's freedom, it prevents them from socialising and thus have an adverse effect on their future when socialising is part an parcel of the trade.
In conclusion, parents did open up some of their thinkings but most parents are still stuck in the older generation where over controling of child is common. Controlling is a good prevention, but over-controlling only proves to be an obstacle to a child's growth, and the fact that parents still over-control their child in the 3 most important aspects: physically, mentally and socially is a sad truth that is still present in this modern society.
