Friends will be present at every stage of our lives. From the time when we were toddlers to the time when we are going to work, friends will always be present. However, true friends that stick with us through thick and thin are rare. Thus, these friendships are so brittle yet so precious, so rare yet so uncherished.
First and foremost, to have a true best friend in life, trust and loyalty between each other are the most important ingredients for this recipe of friendship to work. Without trust, the friendship will be like a constant guessing game, unsure of the other parties' intention, thus suspicion might grow between each other. Similarly, loyalty is needed to provide stability to the friendship. With loyalty, we will be assured that our friends will be there for us when we need them the most, thus, loyalty provides a base for the friendship to progress. Therefore, loyalty and trust are the crux of a friendship and its importance must never be underestimated.
As the saying goes, "a friend in need is a friend in indeed." This is what defines a true friend: One that is willing to lend a helping hand in time of need. It is only when one is truly in need, then it is possible for us to see if the friends around him are true friends. Those that try their best to escape from you in times of distress are known as superficial friends and they will always be with us, just for the namesake 'friend'. Friends that are willing to share your problems and go through weal and woe with you are your true friends. They will be the ones worth cherishing and and we will be able to announce proudly to all our superficial friends "He is indeed my friend that will accompany me through my life!" Hence, true friends are one that are willing to laugh at your jokes, as well as weep at your sorrows. This is called a true friend.
